Alright, I think it's time I started posting this. The contest goes until the end of the year, so feel free to join me!
Chapter 1 - Busy
He was close. So, so close to finishing it. His accelerator would allow him to finish his work in double the speed. Double the efficiency. Which meant more experiments would get done, more things that Mikey or Raph broke would be fixed, more training would be included to please Master Splinter and Leonardo. It would be one of his dreams come true. "And it's so close," Don whispered once again. He reached for his wire, cutters for the tip's better hold, and placed it within the small black shell like device. He put it under the wires, trying to get to the one that needed to be recircuited to complete the little device.
"Donny!"
Don jerked in surprise, the wire cutters cutting through one of the wires. Catching which one it was, he surprised himself and swore colorfully.
"Dude, I thought only Raph knew how to say that," Mikey said cheerfully, joining his brother at his work desk.
Don spun around in his chair facing his brother, trying to be patient. "What do you want Mikey?"
"It's game night Don! We're all ready to play except you."
"Since when do we have game nights?"
"Since tonight."
"I'm busy Mikey, maybe later."
Mikey brought out his not so secret weapon, giving Don his big blue puppy eyes. "Pleeeease… it'll be fun. Board games are always fun."
Don turned back to his work. "No Mikey. I have to get this done. Then I'll play with you guys."
"But Donny…" Mikey whined. "Even sensei said that a game with the whole family would promote as he called it… 'family bonding time'."
Don's head snapped up, his hand pulling away from his work before he could accidentally cut another wire. "How many times do I have to tell you no?"
Mikey visibly swallowed and looked sadly at his brother.
He sighed biting his lip, trying to reign in his frustration. "Mike… I'm sorry. I'm just frustrated that all. I'll come play with you all when I can ok?"
Mikey nodded, let out a whoop, and dashed from the room.
The purple banded turtle shook his head and stood up, rooting through his drawers for more wire. The wrong wire being cut would set him back, but not by too much. Just a few more minutes and then he would be done. He couldn't believe he had snapped at Mikey though. He really needed to get rid of some of his tension. And getting this finished up would do just that.
The next time Donatello looked up at the clock, three hours had passed since Mikey had come in to get him. "What was it for again?" he asked himself. "Oh yes, some sort of board game."
He stood up from his desk and peeked out of his lab. His family was sitting around the coffee table, engrossed in what looked to be a game of Monopoly. Raph looked smug, which could only mean he must be winning at the moment.
"Might not last for long," Don murmured at Raphael as he turned back into the lab. He didn't want to interrupt their game. Most likely they were nearly done by now. He'd play next time.
Right now he had to finish this accelerator. The first try at turning it on had fried more wires and one internal mechanism that not only helped to power it, but also to aid in transferring electrons between two different relay systems within the device.
Pulling more tools and items out of his drawers, he got back to work. "Hopefully I'll have this done before nightfall…" he whispered to himself.
It had only felt like minutes before Raphael came barreling into the lab. "What's the deal with you Donny?"
Don was startled enough to make him twist one of the internal pieces too much to make it snap. He scowled and slowly turned to his immediate older brother. "What is it Raphael?" he asked patiently.
"You've been working in here for days," Raph growled. "You ignore our attempt to ask you to come out here. Heck, you even ignored Mikey's request to play Monopoly."
"You were in the middle of a game when I came out," Don answered, leaning back in his chair.
"Don't think I didn't see your shell disappearing back in here, we were nearly done. It's been another four hours since then. What the hell are you doing in here anyway that keeps you locked away from your family?"
"Nothing."
"Nothing huh? Then you wouldn't mind coming out on patrol with is tonight would you?" Raph narrowed his eyes, a smirk on his lips.
"Actually I would mind. I was nearly done with this accelerator when you came in and startled me. I have to replace yet another of its internal pieces."
Raph's eyes narrowed even further. "Ya ain't gotta choice this time," he growled, grabbing Don by the arm and dragging him out of the lab.
"But… but…" Donny protested. He was so close. He would be able to do so much with this accelerator if he could just get the darn thing finished. His family would benefit from it as well. Why couldn't they understand that his work helped them all?
"What's going on Raph?" Leo asked, standing next to the lair door with his arms crossed.
"Brainiack's comin' with us whether he likes it or not," Raph grumbled.
"Guys, I really don't have time for this," Don spoke up.
Leo sighed, letting his arms fall to his sides. "You've been in there for days Donatello. You barely eat or train or come up with us to get exercise…" His eyes looked at him closely, making Donny feel a little uncomfortable with the scrutiny. "Is something wrong?"
Wrong? What could be wrong? He was so close with the accelerator he could taste the success. He shook his head. "No. Nothing's wrong."
"Then why are you avoiding us bro?" Mikey asked from behind him.
Don turned to keep all of his brothers in his vision and tried to come up with a good answer to Mikey's question. "I'm not avoiding you guys Mikey."
"But Leo's right, I haven't seen you out of there in at least a week. Dude, you're going to catch something sticking your head in those books and gadgets all day."
Don shook his head. "You don't get sick by reading or working in the lab Mikey."
"That's what you think Donny. I recently saw this guy on TV who got this nasty bug and he had been in his lab for about three weeks."
"That would've been if he was working with bacteria or if he kept his lab about as messy as your room."
"Hey! My room's not that messy," Mikey protested.
"Have ya seen yer room or yer floor fer that matter?" Raph questioned, letting go of Donny's arm finally.
"Um… no not really…" Mikey confessed.
"Exactly, that place just breeds bacteria," Don spoke up. "You really need to clean up in there. I'm actually safer in my lab."
"That being said, it would still be a good idea to get some fresh air Donatello," Splinter said softly.
Don turned to his father, his shoulders drooping. He really would've rather stayed home, but it didn't seem a good idea most of the time to go against what sensei requested. "Hai sensei," he murmured.
"Good," Splinter replied with a smile. "Enjoy your time out and be careful my sons."
"We will be Sensei," Leonardo reassured him.
Splinter nodded and waved them off.
Don made sure to quickly grab his bo and his bag just in case before following after his brothers to the surface. Once up there, he surveyed the roof they were standing on and sighed.
"What's up Donny?" Mikey asked.
The purple masked turtle shrugged. "Just seems like it's going to be a boring night."
"Well it won't be fer long," Raph muttered. "Not if I haven anythin' to say about it."
"Every time you same something like that, something always goes wrong," Mikey complained.
"What could go wrong by saying that?" Raph demanded.
"Oh I don't know… a Foot attack, a Purple Dragon attack," Don listed off. "Some other type of mugger trying to sneak up on us."
"And that's a bad thing?"
"Only if it gets you killed bro," Mikey chuckled.
"But speaking of Foot…" Leo whispered from behind them.
"What about them?" Don turned around to face Leo and saw what he meant by the next rooftop being filled with them. "Oh…" He slipped his bo off back, hearing the slight noise of his brothers doing the same.
"So uh… who's going first?" Mikey asked.
The Foot took that as their cue and leaped over the gap between the buildings, dragging out their weapons.
Don barely had time to avoid a swinging blade before having to block another. He flipped over another bunch using his bo to propel himself upward and landed next to Mikey. "How're you doing here Mikey?"
"No sweat bro," Mikey answered, his nunchucks flying into the head of two of the ninjas.
Don swept his staff across the ground, knocking a few off their feet.
"Nice one," Mikey commented. "You really need to get out with us more often."
"Yeah well I try…"
"Try harder next time Genius," Raph grunted from behind him. "And watch your back."
Don spun to see Raphael leaping up after tackling a ninja that was a little too close for comfort. "Well that's what you're for."
Raph snorted and headed back into the fray.
The purple banded turtle spun his staff doing likewise, smacking the next ninja in the back using his momentum to whack another ninja in the side of the head. His bo becoming deadly in his hands, he made another swipe, lifting them off their feet, a pair of nunchucks sending them across the rooftop.
"Leo!"
Don spun with dread upon hearing Raphael's panicked yell. His breath caught in his throat as he saw his elder brother laying motionless on the rooftop, blood leaking from his side, the Elite Guard hovering over him.
"Leo!" Mikey cried, rushing across the rooftop before Don could blink.
Don followed after Mikey, reaching the Elite just after his brothers did. He raised his bo, blocking the swinging ax before making an attack of his own, jabbing the Elite ninja in the stomach. The Elite doubled over, but swept his foot out, knocking Don off his feet. The purple masked turtle only had time to roll away as the ax came down again. Leaping up, he swung his staff with as much strength as he could muster, hitting the Elite ninja in the back of the head.
The Elite ninja collapsed to the ground, another quickly landing on top of the ninja also unconscious.
Not bothering to see if Mikey and Raph had the other two under control, Don rushed to Leo's side. He pressed his hand against the wound grateful it wasn't deep and lightly shook his older brother. "Come on Leo…" he smiled faintly seeing Leo respond. "You're going to be alright."
Leo cracked his eyes open and smiled faintly, but quickly winced.
Don took his trusty bag off his shoulder and dug some gauze out of it. It wasn't much, but it would do until they got home. He quickly wrapped the wound, once again grateful it wasn't that bad.
"You ok Leo?" Raph asked from behind.
Don snatched a look at Raphael as he finished wrapping Leo's side. The other two Elite ninjas looked to be down as well.
"Yeah, I'm fine," Leo answered.
"You call a cut in your side fine?" Raph growled.
"It's not that bad," Leo murmured, sitting up, obviously hiding a wince.
Don reached for Leo and gently helped him up. "Let's get you home bro."
Leo nodded, swaying slightly.
"Gotcha," Raph said from Leo's other side.
"He going to be ok?" Mikey whispered.
Don nodded. "He will be. A couple stitches, some bed rest, and he'll be fine."
"Good luck with keeping him in bed dude," Mikey chuckled as they headed for the sewers.
Don shook his head. He could already imagine the nightmare. Though he knew it wouldn't be that bad. He'd at least make sure Leo got one day of just rest to heal up.
